MY JOURNEY

Welcome to the heart of my sexual and emotional health practice. My name is Denise Borso. I will accompany you on your journey, where health is more than a destination; it is a continuous adventure and a path that is not always straightforward, which I will take with you with humor, understanding and a twinkle in my eye.

Early discoverer
My academic path began at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and then led me to Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, not only to gain medical knowledge, but to really begin to understand the essence of human nature. As it turned out, this is a lifelong task.

Key moments
Infectious diseases, especially STI’s, HIV and hepatitis, became my main professional interest early on. Armed with a prescription for laughter and a commitment to the well-being of my patients, I set out to fight HIV and other invaders. Treating diseases is important, but not forgetting the human being with all its other aspects is, in my opinion, at least as crucial.

Lifelong training
My specialist in internal medicine in 2012 was just the beginning. Numerous certificates and additional qualifications followed, from gaining experience in scientific data collection as an investigator in phase III vaccination studies to obtaining the qualification to perform ultrasound examinations of the abdomen at the University Hospital in Rostock.

During the years in which I held the medical management position at Checkpoint Zurich, I acquired endocrinological expertise in the field of male hormones and their disorders as well as in gender reassignment hormone therapy and general expertise in transgender health care. I am currently delving into the exciting topic of hormonal changes in women during the (peri-)menopause.

Mental health is another focus of my work and an area in which there are endless interesting things to learn. From Motivational Interviewing to obtaining the certificate of competence for the delegation of psychotherapists as well as several other training and further education courses in the field of psychotherapy and psychiatry, I am constantly deepening my insights into human emotions and their processing mechanisms.

I am an eternal learner.

Advocacy and allies
What really defines me goes beyond medical certificates. I advocate for the rights and needs of the LGBTIQ+ community in healthcare and pave the way for inclusivity and understanding wherever I can.

Laughter as medicine
In 2023, I opened my own practice Above & Beyond, a place where health meets humor. Here I live my belief that being understood and being able to laugh together, as serious as the situation is sometimes, can be just as healing as any medicine. It’s not just a medical journey; it’s a shared experience full of presence, understanding and always with a pinch of humor.
